Another product I would have missed …
One of my all-time favourite snacks is Milchschnitte. My mom and my sister also like it a lot. So, it was the only thing that they asked me to bring when I visited them in Turkey. A few weeks ago, my sister came to visit us and she had a surprise for me - "süt dilimi" - which is the tranlated name of Milchschnitte. It is now available at the supermarkets in Bursa! Regarding food, there is not much else left that I miss from Germany.

Hello again, my friend Nergiz.
There's always something that we miss when we move from one place to another one that's very far away.
If I were to move from Arizona, I think that the food I'd miss most is nopalitos—a kind of cactus that is very good grilled with cheese or mixed into scrambled eggs or salads. The one thing I still miss from my home town in Illinois is fresh tomatoes: the ones that are available in supermarkets have no flavor at all! I can buy fresh tomatoes here from a farm that isn't far from where I live, and they taste wonderful, but they're only available for a limited time (May to July), unfortunately.
I was in Germany once, a long time ago, and the foods I remember best from there were black bread and a kind of ice cream made with mixed fruit. I can occasionally find OK black bread here (though it's not nearly as good as in Germany), but I've never had ice cream like I had in . . . Where was it? München? Heidelberg? I don't remember!
I also on the Oregon Coast, right next to the Pacific Ocean, for a number of years. I moved from there to Arizona about 18 years ago, but I still miss the fresh seafood that was so readily available there—in particular, scallops and clams.
I lived in Los Angeles before I lived on the Oregon Coast, and what I miss from there is certain kinds of ice cream. My favorite was green tea, and I think I saw some of that in a grocery store near where I live. I'm going to that store today, and if there is, indeed, green tea ice cream there, I'll be sure to get some!
All the best—
Dennis in Phoenix
Dear Dennis
You've moved a lot it seems. I've just googled "nopalitos". I didn't know the name but I remember them from my stay in San Diego. They were sold in the supermarket. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to try them. Before that, I didn't know that one could actually eat cactus. What do they taste like?
I totally agree with you regarding supermarket tomatoes. Here in Turkey, tomatoes still taste good compared to Germany, especially in summer. But if you talk to people my mom's age, they will tell you that today nothing tastes like it did before. You are very fortunate to have a farm nearby.
Hm, I'm thinking of what kind of ice-cream that could've been you ate in Germany... You seem to like ice-cream :-)
My favourite ice-cream at he Italian ice-cream parlour near my home in Germany was chocolate ice-cream with chilli! Yes! At first, it just tastes like chocolate but then there was this slight chilli taste. Wonderful! Mmm...
Fresh seafood is something that I enjoy now as Bursa is near the cost. I like fish but only those that are not full of small bones.
